What Are the Cleanroom Classifications?

When looking at cleanroom garments or equipment you may wonder what the cleanroom classes actually mean. The cleanroom class is a way of specifying how many particles of a specific size are in a cubic meter of air. Particles are typically measured in micrometers.

There are two main standards used for classifying cleanrooms, ISO 14644-1 and Federal Standard 209E. Luckily they easily cross reference, so if you have an ISO class 3 it is the same as the FED-STD-209E class 1.
