Dial or Digital? Gauging the Right Option

Standard or plastic, waterproof or solar… with all the types of calipers available, finding the best fit for your application can seem overwhelming. The first step may be to determine whether a dial or digital version is right for you. Read on to discover the differences and benefits of each.

Dial Calipers Dial calipers use a gear system to move the dial in increments of one one-thousandth of an inch. Convenient and easy to use, dial calipers don’t require batteries and work well even when damp. However, they are easily knocked out of alignment if dropped, can be difficult to recalibrate, and are usually either imperial OR metric – but not both.

Digital Calipers Digital calipers are based on a capacitance system, and easily convert from inches to metric readings. Because gears are not involved, they are more shock-proof and won’t be knocked out of alignment. They can, however, become damaged or offer inaccurate readings if wet. Specially designed waterproof versions are available from brands like Mitutoyo for harsh fluid environments.

An industry staple for many precision applications, micrometers are an essential for trades ranging from inspection to mechanical engineering and are designed for accuracy to the closest one thousandth of an inch.  But when it comes to micrometers, one type doesn’t fit all. Three commonly used varieties include inside, outside and depth micrometers. Read on to discover which type is best for your application.

Inside Micrometer – Designed to measure the inner diameter or the width of a recess such as the inside of a tube or holes, cylinders, bearings and bushings.

Outside Micrometer – Used to measure the outer diameter of a cylindrical or spherical object, such as a piece of round stock or tubing.

Depth Micrometer – Essential for measuring the depth of holes and recesses including slots, steps, shoulders and projections.

Whether you’re looking for strength and flexibility, or a cost-conscious, reliable alternative, we’ve got the perfect Aven tweezers for your requirements. An industry essential with a remarkably high resistance to rust and corrosion, Aven’s popular stainless steel tweezers are indispensable for a variety of consumer electronics and general manufacturing applications. Available in curved and straight tip options, stainless steel offers an affordable alternative well-suited for a range of general tasks.

For handling more sensitive components, Aven’s new titanium tweezers provide an ideal solution. Three times stronger, one-third lighter and more flexible than stainless steel, titanium tweezers offer a longer utility life and eliminate the issue of particle shedding common to stainless steel varieties. Non-magnetic with a high resistance to corrosion, Aven’s titanium tweezers are ideal for chemical process, microelectronics, medical and scientific fields. They’re new, and are in stock now at All-Spec! Show your delicate components the sensitivity they deserve, and look on the light side with Aven titanium tweezers.
